Cộng đồng các tộc người ngữ hệ Thái – Kađai chiếm một số lượng lớn trong dân cư các dân tộc thiểu số Việt Nam, phân bố chủ yếu ở các tỉnh khu vực Tây Bắc và hai vùng tây Thanh Hóa và tây Nghệ An. Nghiên cứu những đặc điểm về quá trình tộc người, mối liên hệ văn hóa tộc người, không gian văn hóa và các mối quan hệ của cộng đồng trong khu vực Tây Bắc Việt Nam từ hơn 20 năm nay đã và đang là nhiệm vụ của Chương trình Thái học thuộc Viện Việt Nam học và Khoa học phát triển (Viện VNH&KHPT), ĐHQGHN.
